How to run a free NBA prediction pool with friends

To set up a free NBA prediction pool with friends: create a league on a platform that scores it automatically, decide how many of the 82 games per team your group will predict, set the scoring (usually 3 points for the exact score and 2 for picking just the winner), and invite your people with a link. The whole process takes under five minutes.

1. Decide what you'll follow in the NBA

Unlike a football league with 34-38 matchdays, the NBA plays 82 games per team between October and April, almost one every two days. Nobody follows that in full detail, so the first step is narrowing it down: it can be the whole NBA without covering every single game, just one conference, or simply the group's favorite teams plus the week's big matchups.

2. Choose your group's level of commitment

Not every group wants the same thing. Here are the most common ways to set up an NBA pool:

ApproachGames/week approx.Works well if...
Only your team2-4the group has little time or already runs a football pool in parallel
Highlighted games5-8you want to follow the NBA without committing daily
Full seasonAs many as each person picks, no limitthe group is really into basketball and wants a demanding standings table

The whole group doesn't need to follow the same number of games: everyone predicts whichever ones interest them out of what's available, so the approach can coexist within the same league.

3. Set the scoring

The simplest formula, and the one Match Prophets uses by default, awards points based on how precise the prediction is:

  • 3 points for the exact score.
  • 2 points for picking just the winner (there are no draws in the NBA: a tie at the end goes to overtime).
  • 0 points if you miss both.

Just like in a football pool, the prediction locks the moment the game kicks off, so there's no room to change it mid-game.

4. Create the league and share the link

Create a free account, set up the league by selecting the NBA among its competitions, and decide whether it's public or private with an invite link.

Match Prophets lets you combine the NBA with any of the 9 available football leagues within the same league, with a combined standings table.

5. Keep it alive through the Finals

With such a long season, the play-in and playoffs (best-of-7 in every round) are when the pool gets the most addictive: every game matters much more than in the regular season. If the group cools off in January or February, reminding everyone the play-in is coming usually gets participation going again.

Frequently asked questions

How many games do you need to predict in an NBA pool?
As many as each person wants. With 82 games per team in the regular season, most groups narrow it down to their favorite teams' games or the week's biggest matchups, rather than trying to cover the entire schedule.
Does the NBA have draws like football?
No. Every NBA game has a winner — if it's tied at the end of regulation, it goes to overtime — so when predicting, you only need to decide the score and who wins, never a draw.
Can you set up the pool just for the playoffs?
Yes, you don't have to start in October. You can create the league whenever you want and predict only play-in and playoff games, which tend to be the ones that hook the group the most.
Does it cost money to create an NBA pool on Match Prophets?
No, creating the league, inviting your group, and predicting is free, with no limit on participants or games.
Can I see how I compare with other users, not just my group?
Yes, besides your private league's standings, every user has a global and country ranking for the NBA, just like for the football competitions.
